Indian Reserves

Indian Reserve Lands in HTG territory.

The Indian Reserves within HTG core territory represent 0.9% (5,705ha) of the total area and 1.6% of the land area. These Indian Reserves were mostly established in the 1850s-1870s, and many have been cut-off or reduced by federal and provincial governments in the years since. While many (though certainly not all) of these reserves are located at the ancestral village sites of the Hul’qumi’num peoples these tiny areas have been a profoundly inadequate land base for the communities. Under the management of the Indian Act they have suffered many of the issues familiar to reserve lands across Canada, including (but not limited to) inadequate housing, water, infrastructure, education, health and other services.
