Crown Land

Crown land alienation concerns in HTG core territory.

Crown land (not including park land or Indian reserves) covers 39,434ha (4.3%) of the land area of HTG core territory. Crown land in HTG territory is mainly held by the province and is mainly managed for forestry (see 'Forestry' map for more information). There are numerous other small parcels on which leases for residential, institutional, industrial, commercial, community, and utility purposes have been established, or on which tenures for utility, residential, miscellaneous land use, transportation, industrial, institutional, commercial, community, environment/conservation, communication, and quarrying have been granted throughout HTG territory. The limited extent of crown land as well as the spatial fragmentation into small parcels has resulted in numerous challenges for indigenous land rights. Until recently, HTG member First nations have been largely excluded from use and sharing economic opportunities on crown land. Today HTG member nations receive 'referral' letters about development of crown land but these letters have proven, in the experience HTG members, an ineffective forum for consultation.
