Parks & Protected Areas

Parks & Protected Areas in HTG core territory.

Despite the lack of recognition and reconciliation of aboriginal title interests, federal, provincial, local government parks and private land trusts have all worked to establish a network of parks and protected areas in HTG core territory. In total, 4.55% (26,488ha) of the HTG core territory are covered by protected areas and parklands. Of this there are 5 local regional parks, 3,026ha of national parklands (0.52% of HTG land area) , 4,640ha of provincial parklands (0.8% of HTG land area) , 2,429.17ha of ecological reserves (0.42% of HTG land area) , 10,381ha environmental protection/conservation areas (1.78% of HTG land area) , 378ha of conservation NoI areas (.06% HTG of land area), 13,887ha of crown land reserves (2.38% of HTG land area), and 2,209ha of private conservancies (.38% of HTG land area). Hul’qumi’num people have expressed strong concerns about how these protected areas have further restricted their ability to use important lands and harvest resources. In the relatively new National Park Reserve, they have become increasingly involved in the management of these lands, while in most of the other areas there is no systematic framework for dialogue or shared decision-making in provincial, regional, or private protected areas.
